Shane and I worked together at Amazon for about a year on nights in two separate departments. However, Shane’s positivity and collaborative nature made nights feel like one team, with the common goal of delivering for the associates and customers. For example, Shane would check-in with our team daily at the start of shift so we could communicate about how our teams could assist one another throughout the night. He would consistently follow-up with our team afterwards to ensure our efforts aligned, and discuss any plan deviations. Additionally, Shane’s ability to earn trust and develop leaders led me to model many of his leader attributes, most importantly in intentional development and celebration of leaders. For example, Shane allowed higher performing managers latitude to make decisions and assume responsibilities of his to provide them unique opportunities to learn the next-level role in their career development in a controlled environment. Additionally, whenever a leader moved on to other opportunities, not only was Shane integral in helping them obtain those opportunities, but he also celebrated their successes and contribution to the site through mini parties, where he would handout Little Debbie cakes and provide them movies and books he related to leadership to assist them in their next role. Finally, I was always able to rely on Shane to participate in site celebrations and initiatives. When I did not have any clothing to support the site’s Olympics-themed dress up day, he handed out gear to myself and other leaders to wear throughout the day so everyone could partake. Also, Shane was always by my side supporting advertising of Amazon’s mental health resources and charitable donation opportunities, serving associates meals, and leading our site through emergency situations. I am thankful for the time I was able to lead with and learn from Shane, and continue to appreciate his guidance and support today.
